“Unwanted” is an advocacy project designed as a video game. The player’s character is a woman whose pregnancy is not desired. The player is in charge of helping her find possibilities to end the pregnancy, by exchanging information with game characters whose position ranges from pro-life to pro-choice.

Limitations set on induced abortion by law and social acceptance in different countries are represented in the game. In each case, a strategy must be devised for the player’s character to secure a choice regarding her pregnancy. The analogy set between game tactics on one hand, and planning within a legal and social context on the other, allows the audience to understand this woman’s agency, or lack thereof.

Video games are increasingly used as vessels to convey intense individual experiences. Using stories beyond stereotypes of sexual irresponsibility, this project portrays the struggle of women who want to choose for themselves, their social vilification and confinement by lack of information. The stigmatisation associated with abortion is thus exposed to the audience, and this oppression mechanism, revealed.

“Unwanted” is a project realised in collaboration with Ciocia Basia (Berlin), a grassroots group which helps women in Poland accessing a safe and legal abortion in Germany.
